3 Part Soul (Plato)

Myth of the charioteer model

  • R(W,PK) Reason (Wisdom,Philosopher Kings)

  • A(T,T) Appetite (Temperance, Trades)

  • S(C,G) Spirit (Courage, Guardian)

graph{ a[label="Reason", fixedsize=true]; b[label="Appetite",fixedsize=true]; c[label="Spirit",fixedsize=true]; a--b; a--c; b--c; {rank=same b c} }

Myth of Err

3 Selves (Freud)

Born with ourselves and we can’t see them.

  • Ego (balancing between id and super ego)

  • Id (self-centric)

  • Super ego (parents)

graph{ a[label="Ego", fixedsize=true]; b[label="Id", fixedsize=true]; c[label="Super Ego", fixedsize=true]; a--b; a--c; b--c; {rank=same b c} }

Guilt is produced when the self fails to live up to the expectation of the super ego. Shame is produced when the self fails to live up to the expectation of the ego.

“He’s an optimistic person” (essentialism view point)

Existentialism

Existentialism: We exist because of our choices and the choices of others.

We have no essence -> we have no self, but we have free will to choose.
